Description:

KWordQuiz is an educational application created as part of the KDE Education Project. Described as "a general flash card program," KWordQuiz allows users to learn and practice many subjects (not just vocabulary words, although it would be an excellent tool for vocabulary lessons) through flash cards and quizzes. It is apparently the KDE version of the Windows WordQuiz program, but I've never used the Windows version, so I cannot compare the two.

  • The initial window of a new vocabulary allows the instructor (or other user designing the flashcards/quizzes) to enter the relevant information into two columns. In the example below, the first column is a list of the 50 US state names, and the second column is a list of the corresponding 50 US state capital names.
  • Users can choose to arrange these items in several different configurations for the sake of increasing variety and challenge. Several different quiz styles may be chosen for each set of data, including flash cards, multiple choice, and fill-in-the-blanks. The quizzes keep track of how many correct and incorrect answers are provided, and the users are given a chance at the end of the quiz to repeat the ones they missed for extra review.
  • In addition to creating your own sets of data, there are many downloadable sets available in the KWordQuiz package. These can be located by clicking on "File" and selecting "Get New Vocabularies." Examples of sets I've seen so far include geography, chemistry, some foreign languages, music key signatures, anatomy/physiology, and a couple related to test preparation.
