Application Name: Tomboy
Application License: GNU Lesser General Public License
Description:
Tomboy is a "simple note taking" application -- sort of a combination of organized sticky notes and a desktop wiki.
- It offers the ability to create new notes either by selecting "File"/"New" like most other programs, or, wiki-style within a note, you can highlight a word and then click "Link" and it creates a new note with that highlighted word as the default title for the new note. Also, as you're typing a note, if Tomboy recognizes that a term has been used elsewhere, it automatically links that term to the other related note.
- In addition to the wiki function, you can organize your notes into "Notebooks" by creating a new notebook, naming it anything you choose, and then selecting it from the drop-down notebook menu of each note.
- The appearances and features of Tomboy are relatively customizable, as you can change the default template of new notes, set up some hotkeys for quick addition of notes (example: when I press <Alt>N, regardless of what program I have running on top, it will automatically start a new note for me), and use add-ins/plug-ins to enhance the features. One example of a plug-in is the ability to drag and drop an email from Evolution Mail directly into a new note. (As a side, Evolution Mail in Ubuntu is nice to use with UTK email system, instead of having to download and use the proprietary Microsoft Outlook 2003).
