Learn about Joomla!

I made Joomla. Somehow that sounds bad. I'm not one for instruction manuals so I just dove right in and started playing around. I gave myself Super Administrator rights because I could and added my own article to the front page that expires itself on 12/1/2008. All in all not bad. Took about 15 minutes to accomplish.

I added an article on the Front Page of Joomla! I have to admit that I'm completely new to all of this. Everything I stumble upon amazes me and makes me want to investigate further. Once I'm finished with the classes of course! Who has time now? I'm curious what all CMSs like Joomla! and Drupal can do. How are they different from the WYSIWYG editors that we have researched? Is the fact that they are open source the only difference? I think it was definitely a good idea to start out with Drupal. It seems a little bit more narrow than Joomla! and according to the reading, Joomla! is kind of in the middle. I certainly want to explore more. This was a fun assignment. I created the account and was give Registered status. I then went into the admin account and bumped up my permissions to publisher. from their I published an article. I let it go for a bit. Today I went back in and bumped my status to super admin. I bumped ,y article to the first page, and played around with the order a bit. I like Joomla, but I have tried to use it before and it is really hard for me to understand in its out of the box form. I don;t know why because it is so prety and user friendly, but something about it confuses me. . . a lot.
It was easier this time around.

I agree with Ashley that this assignment was a lot of fun. I found that Joomla was very "deep" as far as its capabilities. There is just so much that could be done. I could see where someone could use this to create an entire website and never have to really mess much with coding or things of that nature. Of course you would have to learn the Joomla environment so in that sense it would be a lot like learning HTML or something similar on in a fairly friendly UI.
The down side is the amount of time that would be necessary to truly understand the capabilities of Joomla. But there again that really goes with any program.

Wow! This class such knows how to introduce my small brain to new things. Never, ever heard of Joomla. Not exactly sure what all it does yet but thought i would start slowly by adding a comment. I guess you gotta take baby steps before you jump head first. I am excited to learn what all you can do with Joomla.

Heather Mekelburg's experience with Joomla: I created my account and then went in and gave myself Super Admin status right away. I then Googled "Joomla Tutorials" and through these tutorials I was able to add a hit counter to the website. I also went in and made another template that had already been installed the default template, just to change the look a bit. I figured out how to takeover Jeff's monopoly on the banners, but decided to let him keep those. I just added bits and pieces of 'me' to the website. It was fun. I would definitely like to use Joomla, but with my user's manual addiction, I'd definitely like to have a physical book to refer back too. edited 20:21, 15 Oct 2008

Time is what I need for Joomla! I want to take more time on Joomla! because, at this moment, it is not my favorite. I worked on it last week and decided I needed to think about it and come back. I'm not going to form an "definite opinion" until I have more time to play!

Joomla? I created my account gave myself admin power, no need to be superman. Created an article, after spending about 20 min trying to change the front page from the bee to milkyway, then posted it to the front page. If I find time I might use it to create a website for my final project.

Well I am feeling friendlier toward Joomla tonight. I added an FAQ, and article, a web link and created another article that got lost in cyberspace somewhere and never showed up as published. It's a tool. I was wondering if all the Joomla "stuff" always stays on the page?

Holy crap... It was really intense finding my way around... at first I felt really lost, - your mom forgot you in the store lost- and wasn't sure what do to and where to go, but thanks to all these comments and all the information everyone shared I made my way around... only to have my first article dissapear... this is a very interesting experience so far.

I really enjoyed playing around with Joomla!. As mentioned in the article that I posted to the site, I am restricted to a particular program for my school webpage and do not have a lot of freedom. Experiencing that freedom through Joomla! makes me want to create a different website, maybe two years from now, that I can use for whatever my heart desires. I also created a poll and added a link to the Joomla! sponsored forum. I did not switch myself to super admin because with great power comes great responsibility (sorry, couldn't resist). I did visit the Joomla! extensions websites to see what kinds of things can be added to individualize a page or see what other features are available.

Well the article that I first posted was very similar to what I put on the Drupla demo page but some how I did not save it or something. So after getting Susan's email about how much she enjoyed everything I went back to see what all had been changed. My article was no where to be found. I did not save it anywhere on my hard drive so I just created a little poll for the front page. Still not a big fan of Joomla.

Joomla is cool! Really wish I'd learned how cool it was when everybody else did. I posted a top ten list just so see if I could get it up there. I had to post it twice to see it. I don't know where the first one went. If someone finds it let me know. To get my list up there I had to modify the front page with admin privileges. This has been some experience. I want to try some other things if I can only figure out how.

This seems pretty cool... I agree it is deep and capable of doing alot. It can be overwhelming. I have a website created through TeacherWeb that I feel isn't as overhwelming...
